Well, today marks the end of our Monster Buddies line of pillows. First up was Fun Franky, then Rad Vlad, and now this guy. He's quite the little trouble maker. And he's always ready with a raised eyebrow and a half grin to say "It wasn't me, I swear!" The best part about this guy is that you can change his facial expression in a many different ways. First, his mouth is the zipper, so you can close it for a straight-lined mouth of dismay, keep it fully open in a gummy grin, or anything in between. You can cover up his eyebrows, or cover the tops of his eyes, the bottoms of his eyes - honestly, the possibilities are endless. And could provide you, er, your KIDS with hours of entertainment ;P
You'll need:
Thin white fabric (I used a flat sheet from Walmart that I've gotten a LOT of projects out of)
Free pattern
1 piece black felt
1 piece white felt
1 7" white zipper
12"x12" pillow form
Print out your pattern and use it to cut 2 pieces of white fabric. I cut one piece about 1/2" longer than the other, and you'll see why in a minute.
Take the longer piece, and cut it straight across about 2/3 of the way down. This is where your zipper is going to go.
Pin your 2 pieces together, baste stitch, then press the seam open. Lay your zipper on the back side of the seam with the teeth and zipper pull FACING the seam. Pin the zipper to the fabric from the RIGHT side of the fabric
From the top of the fabric (where the pins are), sew all the way around the zipper with your zipper foot on. Rip out the stitches in the middle of your rectangle and open your zipper.
I apparently didn't get pictures of this part, but cut out your felt circles (the larger ones in white and the smaller ones in black.) Sew the black irises to the whites of the eyes, then position on the "face" and sew down with a straight stitch. Cut out your eyebrows if desired and sew into place.
Rip some strips of the white fabric, then drape them across the front however you would like. Start at the bottom and work your way up. You might want some down the sides, some criss-crossed across the front. Really, it's up to you and what you think looks best. Pin down all along the sides and baste them in place. Flip over and trim the edges so that they line up with the original piece of fabric.
Tack down any pieces in the middle that need more stability.
Lay your back piece on top of Melvin's face. Pin around the edges and stitch closed. Make sure his mouth, um, zipper is open.
Flip him right side out and stuff with pillow form and you're good to go :D
