31 Days of Halloween 2014 - Day 26: Silvermist's Trick-or-Treat Bag

My oldest daughter really wanted to be Silvermist the Fairy for Halloween this year...and let me tell you, there's not a whole lot out there for that particular character.  We scoured the internet, and the only place we could find an actual Silvermist costume was on the British Amazon page - and we couldn't figure out how to order it.

We ended up finding a blue fairy costume on Zulily and my daughter said it would work for her.  I felt bad, so I decided to make her a "water" bag to trick or treat with, since Silvermist is a water fairy (for those of you who didn't know that).  This is a REALLY cheap project, and took me no longer than 30 minutes from start to finish.

Supplies:
5 sheets light blue felt (9x12)
1 sheet medium blue felt (9x12)
1 sheet dark blue felt (9x12)
White and dark blue thread

I already had the thread, and the felt is 4/$1 at Hobby Lobby, so I paid less than $2 for this project!  LOVE when stuff is that inexpensive :D

First, cut one of the pieces of light blue felt in half lengthwise, so you have 2 strips 4.5" x 12".  Set aside one of the strips for later.  Take the remaining strip and something round (I used a coffee cup).  Place half of the cup on the edge of the felt and trace around so you have a semi-circle shape.  Continue across, making sure that you are connecting the half-circles to create a point in between.

Repeat with the medium and dark blue sheets of felt.

Layer your "waves" and lay on top of one of the full sheets of light blue felt.  Pin down and begin sewing along the wave lines (in dark blue thread for the dark and medium waves and white for the top light blue wave, and baste around the edges.

Back

Take the other half of the light blue felt that you set aside.  Cut 2 more strips from a full sheet of felt that are the same width (4.5"x9").  Sew them together: short-long-short.  This is the side of your bag.

Pin the long piece to the bottom of the bag, and pin the shorter pieces to the sides WRONG SIDES TOGETHER.  I start with the bottom to make sure that everything lines up properly.  (This picture shows it pinned right sides together - I didn't like it and ended up ripping it out and starting over.)

Take another sheet of light blue felt and attach to the back the same way you attached the front to the sides.

Cut 2 strips of felt lengthwise - approx 2-3" wide each.  Fold them in half and stitch.

Arrange straps and pin them to the front of the bag (since the waves go so high, I didn't want to sew through them and did it this way.).  Sew, flip right side up and zigzag stitch over the seam.

Line them up on the other side and stitch the straps on the same way.

Trim any seams as needed to even them out.  Super easy :D

And here it is all glittered up.

Just perfect for our sweet little Silvermist :D
